Mini Review: ICO Videogame

Ico videogame imageIco is a three-dimensional platform game designed and directed by Fumito Ueda, published by Sony Computer Entertainment and released for the PlayStation 2 across various regions.

The young Ico with a pair of horns is considered a bad omen for his village, then he is taken by a group of warriors to a castle delimited by water and locked inside one of the sarcophagi in a crypt. Sometime after the warriors depart, a tremor runs through the castle, and Ico is able to take advantage of it to escape his confines.  He comes across Yorda, the daughter of the castle’s Queen,  together must work to flee before they can be claimed by the spirits.

The player controls Ico from a third-person perspective as he explores the castle, solves puzzles and assists the Yorda across obstacles. Escape from the castle is difficult because of the shadows sent by the Queen, who will try to lead Yorda into a black hole. Yorda is controlled by the second controller for European and Japanese version.

Ico introduced wonderful design, animations, a story told with minimal dialog, bloom lighting and perfect moment, logical, illusion have influenced subsequent games. Ico would be the emblem of the minimalist movement,  if you could talk about videogames in the art as literature or painting.

ICO Videogame can be bought on Amazon for around £42.00
