British Gas have introduced a new, energy saving, meter called a Smart Meter. A British Gas Smart Meter is far removed from traditional meters and is bringing technology into the heart of your house.
A Smart Meter will provide you with instant, accurate, figures on your energy usage. The Smart Meter also does away with having to scrabble around under the stairs reading your meter and then submitting them online or via the post – it submits all this information by itself – pretty smart!
A display unit that you can mount in your kitchen or hall gives an easy to understand ‘traffic light’ display – a visual indication on your usage. Red means your usage is heavy at the moment, green means its light.
And best of all they’re free! British Gas are installing smart meters and in-home displays for free to all their customers, and installation only takes about an hour and a half. You stay on the same tariff as you’re on now, although most customers are finding as they start to understand what causes high energy consumption that they use less, with some saving up to 10%* on their bills after installing a Smart Meter.
The rollout of Smart Meters has already started, with around 160,000 homes in the UK already having a Smart Meter. British Gas have committed to providing Smart Meters in all homes by 2019.
Of course, you will still need to stay on top of your energy statements, making sure that you’re are being billed for what the Smart Meter says you’ve used. Overall though this has far less risk of going wrong than me scribbling numbers on a bit of paper by torchlight under the stairs, and the benefits of increased energy awareness will be good for everyone.
