Leeds Rhinos Players To Wear Twitter Handles On Their Shirts

In a move that appears to be a first for UK Sport, Leeds Rhinos Rugby League players have replaced the names on the back of their rugby shirts, in favour of their Twitter usernames.

Leeds Rhinos have been heavily involved in using Twitter as a tool to promote fan interaction and have been encouraging their players to do the same.

According to their site, the club’s official Twitter account, @leedsrhinos, has received nearly 400 new followers since the announcement last week whilst individual players have also seen a marked increase in their followers after wearing the new shirts.

This is a refreshing contrast to other sports and companies where we are seeing increasing incidents of Twitter bans being put in place where too much direct user engagement is being frowned upon.

Leeds Rugby Media & PR Manager Phil Daly said:

We are delighted that the RFL have allowed us to bring this initiative forward. Twitter has been fantastic for us as a tool for communicating with our fans and especially so for our players.
