Online shopping is a big business, and every year the shopping season starts a little earlier while online retailers offer to ship gifts out just a little bit later. This year it came back to bite them as the Wall Street Journal is reporting that big boys like Amazon and Wal-Mart missed their December 25th shipping date along with a slew of smaller retailers. As you can imagine, there are a lot of upset shoppers out there as a lot of folks had missing gifts under the tree.
Some retailers like Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Groupon are offering up gift certificates to help ease the pain of delayed shipments. Amazon is said to have hired a whopping 70,000 seasonal workers to help with the holiday rush, and the shopping season was cut a bit short this year as there were six fewer days to shop. While no firm numbers have been thrown around, the delays seem to be across the board in the US affecting UPS, FedEx, and USPS. One has to assume international shipments have been hit with a delay as well.
As someone who does 80-90% of their holiday shopping online, I can tell you firsthand shipping was a mess this year. We have several packages still in limbo (USPS) at the time of this writing, although thankfully all our orders from Amazon came right on time and they didn’t even need a Drone… yet. You can expect things to be just as hectic if not worse next year as more people turn to online shopping for their holiday needs in the US and abroad.
